Great Egret, Ardea alba, Summer 2017 Lake Pine, Apex NC
“Through these woods I have walked thousands of times. For many years I felt more at home here than anywhere else, including our own house. Stepping out into the world, into the grass, onto the path, was always a kind of relief. I was not escaping anything. I was returning to the arena of delight. I was stepping across some border. I don’t mean just that the world changed on the other side of the border, but that I did too…
In the pinewoods is where the owl floats, and where the white egret paces, in summer, like a winged snake, in the flashing shallows.” ~Mary Oliver

Lucky, indeed. It’s amazing what appears during my walks, usually when I least expect it. Thanks for reading:)

Wow!! PS I discovered Mary Oliver only a few years ago and just love her work – she seems to have expressed every experience I have ever had perfectly!

She is my favorite poet ever. She loves the woods and nature and I get lost in her lyrical descriptions. She has another book coming out soon!

Thanks, Derrick. This is one of those accidental captures. I thought it turned out too dark, but realized that the contrast of black/white made it even more beautiful.
